As avid motorcyclists, all of us here at the Law Offices of George A. Malliaros have a vested interest in motorcycle safety, and we are especially sensitive to matters involving rider responsibility and driver awareness. At times, there seems to be a tangible disregard for or contempt toward motorcyclists, and this attitude has resulted in countless accidents, many of which have sadly proven lethal for tens of thousands of riders and other drivers.

Given the very nature and structure of a motorcycle, these vehicles are far more likely than traditional cars, vans, or trucks to be involved in an accident, and these accidents are far more likely to result in serious injuries or fatalities. Motorcycles also have unique acceleration, maneuverability, and size, which can make them difficult to spot and avoid, especially when traveling at high speeds.

These factors all contribute to the potential for accidents; in 2013, fatality rates were 26 times higher for motorcyclists than traditional drivers based on miles traveled. In 2014, 92,000 motorcyclists were injured in motor vehicle crashes and 4,586 were killed. Yet, while helmets have been shown to be 37% effective in preventing fatalities and 67% effective in preventing brain injuries, only 19 states and the District of Columbia have enacted helmet laws. Thankfully, helmets are required by law in Massachusetts, so be sure to wear yours whether you’re going up the street or out on the highway.
